Meet Oliver!

Oliver graduated with a degree in creative writing and performance acting from York College.

After difficulty finding paid work, his mum suggested he volunteered at Park House Barns. ‘I met Richard the horticulturist when I started in September 2015, he soon took me under his wing, and I began to enjoy the place and growth and mostly being outdoors in the field.’ Within the same year, Richard asked If Oliver would like the job as Assistant Horticulturalist, an opportunity that Oliver could not turn down! ‘I was amazed and ecstatic at the idea.’

Oliver has been the Horticulture Assistant at Park House Barns since 2016, which was his first job. Since then, he’s continued to develop his skills which include the various crop sowing methods, identifying, and removing weeds, mowing, and edging the individual plots and understanding pest control. He’s also increased his flower and vegetable vocabulary and learnt how to prepare crops for sale.

Through increasing his skills, experience and confidence, Oliver is enjoying his promotion as the Horticulture Lead in charge of the five-acre field. ‘I enjoy watching the crops in the field grow, and the sense of achievement when all the products sown to start the grow, which are the fruits of our labour.’
